Livelihood and Linkage Activitie
Improved Cooking Stove
In rural settlement of Nepal, fire wood is main fuel source for cooking purposes. Smoke emitted from the use of "Chulo" (traditional stove) disperses to every room and floor of the houses. Traditional kitchen stoves are more fuel consuming (means more forest, environment deterioration and poor health status). Since there is no other alternative, collection and use of firewood for the entire year is not just a matter of drudgery but also directly affects the health of villagers. In such scenario, Improved Cooking Stove (ICS) could be a better option for villagers who depend on firewood for cooking. ICS is a simple low cost technology that can be easily built and maintain by the villagers locally. Using ICS, the smoke from the kitchen gets diverted outside the house preventing other rooms and floor getting smoked and reduce fuel consumption. This will significantly help to improve the environment, health status as well as provide opportunity for villagers to generate construction skills of ICS.
NEWAH, Eastern Regional Office (ERO) has initially installed 164 ICS in Udayapur district. This program has been most appreciated and demanded by the community .This is one of the initiatives, which directly affects and benefits the village women. They have stressed ICS as their first priority in improving their health conditions. NEWAH has planned to replicate such program in other regions as well.
Micro Saving and Credit
Driven by the realization that the maintenance and operation fund lying idle in the community, NEWAH intervene a saving and credit program to maximize the livelihood opportunities. NEWAH has piloted a community saving and credit initiative in each of the five development regions. This allowed the formation of several saving and credit committees who were empowered with basic saving and credit trainings. This initiative will be continued in the subsequent year by reflecting experiences and lesson learned.
Micro Irrigation
With a vision of improving a quality of life of Nepalese by providing services in safe water, health, sanitation and livelihood opportunities NEWAH has started to incorporate micro irrigation progammes in its projects. The main objective of initiating such programmes is that the community can make optimum use of water available for irrigating vegetables and other cash crops to raise their household income and better health status. Basically NEWAH installs drip irrigation scheme in hill and treadle pump in terai.
