The status of basic sanitation in the country is in a far worse condition. According to the Nepal Demographic and Health Survey 2006 only 42 percent of the population in Nepal use improved latrines and a majority of them do not adopt good hygiene practices. Lack of access to improved facilities of water and sanitation coupled with meagre awareness has victimised people with various diseases in large numbers every year and has been a cause for untimely deaths of many. Annually 13,000 children are lost to diarrhoeal diseases even before they reach the age of five (UNICEF 2005)
