Rain Water Harvesting

Rain Water Harvesting actively draws upon traditional management system and knowledge. It uses simple technology, which can be maintained at the household level. No new organizational structures are needed for operations and maintenance.

Settlement of community on ridges and crests make accessibility to water, a problem for the people. Rainwater harvesting is a viable technological option that has been practiced for centuries in these communities. Rain Water Harvesting has been very useful in rural settlements where the pressure head is not sufficient to supply water from the conventional source such as springs and streams.

NEWAH is engaged in trying out different options for rain water harvesting to suit different locations and conditions. Some of them are:

A. At household level:

A ferro-cement tank of 2000 liters capacity is constructed for this purpose. The number of units can be increased depending upon the need of water. The roof (generally CGI) is used as the catchments. Gutters made of plain galvanized sheets together with HDPE pipes are used to drain water into the tank. A tap stand is constructed for drawing water out of the tank. NEWAH has assisted building such tanks at household level in rural communities.

B. At institutions:

When a larger storage space is required to store water required for a larger number of people for a longer period of time, large capacity tanks are constructed. Specially designed Ferro cement tanks of 24000 liters capacity are used to store water for schools and institutional buildings.

C. Demonstration units at NEWAH Headquarters

Rainwater harvesting can be tried equally in urban areas. It is a sustainable option to the erratic water supply from the municipal system. Rainwater harvesting enthusiasts have even built systems, which has helped them gain independence of the municipal water supply system in Kathmandu.

NEWAH is on its way to promote its headquarters as a demonstration site. This office complex has provision of rainwater harvesting for the following purposes:

  1. Flushing of toilets
  2. Use of excess rain water to recharge ground water table
  3. Use of rain water for gardening and washing vehicles

This demonstration ground has been utilized for trying out various rainwater harvesting options. Retrofitting works are usually not liked by urban household as they destroy the aesthetics of the house and of the bathrooms. This demonstration ground has tried some techniques which overcomes this problem. It has also tried low cost guttering options.

NEWAH would like to welcome people and organizations interested to know on rainwater harvesting. It provides technical advice to people who would like to adopt this technique of harvesting rainwater.
