Sanitation

According to Nepal ninth five year plan only 25 % of total population have access to sanitation. NEWAH approach is to firstly provide the necessary knowledge to build functioning latrine and then to provide a range of sanitation options at a subsidized rate which the rural people can afford and maintain themselves. In most cases, the beneficiaries themselves are responsible for all labor, such as digging pits and fitting any lining and for installing latrine components. They are also responsible for building the superstructure. NEWAH has been successful at persuading approximately 75% of its beneficiaries in the Hill projects to install domestic latrines. However due to soil conditions in the Terai, latrine components are more expensive. The costs are considerably higher as the latrine cannot be constructed without a lining. To add to this, the poverty level, landlessness and lack of social awareness results in very low demand near about 25 %.

NEWAH has also started to construct the school latrine with in the project area especially where child to child programme is conducted within the regular school hygiene promotion programms.

Sanitation Program:

This program includes the construction of different types (simple pit latrine, direct single pit, offset single pit, offset double pit etc.) of latrines with subsidize rate that community can afford and maintain themselves and meets the practical need of men, women and children. NEWAH also supports to build the school latrine, community or share latrine and public latrine. It has own working policy & procedure for implementing the sanitation program that can be revised as per community feedback and suggestion.

1. Domestic latrine:

To add to this, the poverty level, landlessness and lack of social awareness result in very low demand near about 25 %. NEWAH supported to build more than 26000 domestic latrines in rural area of country.

2. School latrine:

NEWAH has also started to construct the school latrine with in the project area especially where child to child program is conducted within the regular school hygiene promotion programs. Till now, 147 improved school latrines have been built. Hygiene education and awareness part is compulsorily included along with the construction of latrine.

3. Public latrine:

NEWAH had supported to built 7 public latrines in urban and semi-urban areas. Some of the latrine are still functioning very well and some are not. Only the construction of facility is not a big issue, proper use and operation and maintenance of the facility is very important to achieve its sustainable goal. Therefore NEWAH has been realized and done a public latrine study in Kathmandu Valley to know the better way of forward in future.

4. Community latrine or share latrine:

The poorest people who have no or very less land and very low economic condition can not afford latrine facility individually. In this case NEWAH gives an idea or option to the community people to build community or share latrine where community can share their land, money and human resources among them. NEWAH has supported to build four blocks of community latrine for 27 households. Now these all latrine blocks have been using properly and maintaining very well. It is very useful in urban or semi urban area, slums or where the settlement is clustered.

Innovative activities started on Latrine promotion & Environmental Sanitation:

  • Brick pavement
  • Tap stand drainage
  • Drains & sewer construction in semi-urban area.
  • Base of latrine - it helps to reduce 30- 40% cost of latrine
  • Eco- sanitation latrine
  • Sanitation-mart
  • Community led total sanitation
